Meet the Team
Laurie Murphy has spent most of her career working with the environment in different capacities. Her background includes a B.S. in Oceanography and a Master’s in Geographical Information Science from the University of West Florida.
Laurie’s passion for clean water began with a non-profit organization that focused on enhancing the quality of our Nation’s water. In her groundwork to understand the impacts of stormwater pollution, Laurie met John Whitescarver, one of the original employees of the EPA.
John was part of a team that developed the first National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit under the Clean Water Act. Laurie and John worked together for many years after his retirement from the EPA to develop and provide training and certification courses to help NPDES permittees meet Clean Water Act requirements.
Laurie’s field of expertise is working with federal and state permittee regulators as well as Municipal, Industrial, and Construction stormwater permittees. To date, she has certified thousands of inspectors that work under National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits. She also assists the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Agency to certify Erosion and Sediment Control Inspectors for the state of Florida.
Laurie resides in Pensacola, Florida, where she and her spouse have five children and three grandchildren. Her favorite hobbies include gardening, kayaking, and spending time with her family. She also continues to work with non-profit agencies to assist in water restoration projects throughout her state.
Pat is the Operations Director of The Stormwater Training Center. Aside from running the day-to-day operations, he uses his 23 years of training experience to teach our instructors how to put on a fun, interactive, and content-filled training program for all participants.
The first thing our instructors do is find out what is important to our learners—what do you need help with when it comes to stormwater? We do this by asking participants questions and then tailoring the class to meet their needs.
Next, all our instructors are trained in making online or in-person presentations enjoyable and relevant. We use a ton of pictures, illustrations, videos, Google Maps, and GIS applications so you can easily “see” what the instructor is teaching—ideal for visual learners.
We take pride in having a team of great presenters who know how to add a good bit of humor to each training session. Our instructors will encourage you to ask questions, participate in the training, and share best practices.
Have a question? Our instructors take the time to answer all of your questions before, during, and after class—no question is too advanced or too insignificant. Whether you have a specific question about the process you just learned or would like a second opinion on how to handle a general stormwater problem, our instructors are here as a resource for you.
Simply put, The Stormwater Training Center instructors are some of the most knowledgeable, experienced experts in the stormwater industry. If you have any questions about which specific course to take, give us a call and we will be glad to help you.
